History Of The Pretzel

Pretzels in basket.jfif

There are numerous accounts as to the history of the origin of the pretzel.  Most associate the creation of the pretzel to North-Central Europe, likely, Germany or Poland.  Austria and Switzerland could easily stake a claim to the creation of the doughy, salty deliciousness as well.

The shape of the pretzel is even more mysterious, as the first "pretzels" were likely identified as pastries or bread, and therefore shaped nothing like the twisted creation we have today.

Pretzel Styles and Shapes

Pretzels come in all shapes, sizes and flavors.  Most, however, start with simple ingredients, like wheat flour, salt, yeast and soda.  Some Pretzel bakers are thinking outside the box (or bag) and are using legumes as their main ingredient (lentils, beans), which give the Pretzel a jolt of protein!  Of course, bakers are also making gluten-free Pretzels, using corn, potato and/or rice starch in place of wheat.  One thing is for certain, all Pretzels are baked goodness.
